Archives For Apps

I have tried many different ways to track prayer requests and who I need to pray for. I have kept a hand-written prayer journal, an excel spreadsheet, an Evernote note, and shamefully even just tried to keep it all in my head. But I have never quite found the perfect solution.

Ora

Well, there is a new free app on the market promising to deliver a new way to pray – the Ora App.

I recently downloaded it, and I’m very pleased with what I have found.

Ora is like a social network for prayer. You create a profile and instead of posting a status or tweeting, you post prayer requests.

You can invite your friends to join, and divide them into groups. So you can get your small group together, a group of pastors you to pray for, or even a group for your entire church.

Once a prayer is posted, you can comment on prayer requests and swipe the request to let them know that you have prayed for it.

You can also mark your prayers as answered and keep track of God’s faithfulness.

Another cool feature is that you can also set an alarm to remind you to pray every day at a specific time.

Last week, I was horrified when I heard that Google has officially announced that it will be shutting down Google Reader on June 1, 2013.

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you probably know already that I am a huge fan of Google Reader. I have written about it here, here and here.

I use Google Reader every day to scan hundreds of my favorite blogs and websites. It helps me learn for free from the greatest minds in the church and business world. I also love how easy it makes finding good articles about preaching to share with all of you on Twitter and Facebook. Google Reader has been my morning ritual for years.

I am really going to miss it. But after a brief panic attack, I got to work looking for the best alternative I could find to replace it.

Thankfully there are some good alternatives out there. The Google Reader alternative that I have settled on Feedly.

Feedly has clearly outlined its intention to continue on in a post Google Reader world. It seems to be the most popular choice among others I follow. And it is free. Who doesn’t like free?

By simply logging in to your Google account, they will automatically transfer over all of your Google Reader info. Continue Reading…

Evernote is my digital brain. It is by far the app I use most, because it has made my life as a pastor so much easier!

Here are just 5 of the ways Evernote has simplified my life and boosted my productivity:

1.Paperless Office

My office used to be cluttered. Stacks of paper would pile up on my desk, because I knew I would need to reference them later and I didn’t have time to properly file them.

Evernote has now allowed me to go completely paperless in the office and at home. Plus, I can look through my digital file cabinet anywhere on my computer, iPhone, iPad or online.

I use the built-in Evernote function on Genius Scan to take pictures quickly sync them to Evernote. Amazingly, Evernote allows you to search for text in a picture. So if you scan a document and want to find it later, no problem. Just search for something in the document and it will pop up in seconds. Continue Reading…

iPad 2 w/ Smart CoverUsing my iPad as a pastor for the last 2 years, I have tried a lot of different apps.

If you are anything like me, you are in a never-ending hunt, roaming the iTunes App Store looking for the next app that will make your iPad better than ever.

After trying many many different apps, I have put together a list (in no particular order) of my absolute favorite iPad apps for ministry that I truly believe every iPad packing pastor needs.

Note: These are affiliate links. At no cost to you, a very small commission from purchases helps support the cost of running this website. Also, I promise that I do not recommend anything that I am not using myself. So if you click a link, thanks for the support!

iPhone 5

Yesterday I wrote Part 1 of my list of favorite iPhone apps that I use as a pastor. Today I finish up with Part 2.

Note: The links are affiliate links, which means I get a small commission on products sold at no cost to you. I barely make any money from this. It is just a tiny way to help cover the cost of keeping this blog running. I will also never recommend a product I don’t use. So if you click a link, thanks for the support!

These are some more of my favorite apps, in no particular order:

HootSuitThis app (and the website version) schedule all of my Facebook posts for my ministry’s Facebook page. I sit down once a week and write all the posts I want to go out that week. HootSuit allows me to schedule posts for specific dates and times. I no longer have to remember to log into Facebook at just the right time on the right day to get a message out. Hootsuit has increased the activity and likes on my church’s Facebook page and takes a lot less time and effort. Win!

Presentation Clock – I speak a lot in an environment with no clock. Rather than bringing in a big clock and mounting it in the back of the room, I use Presentation Clock. I set the length of time I have to speak, then I place it on a stand next to my Bible. It counts down the time remaining and changes colors to warn you when you need to start wrapping things up.
