Christmas Letter to Jesus Sermon Illustration

A Christmas Letter to Jesus (Sermon Illustration)

There once was a little boy named Billy who was known for being selfish and mean. So when his dad caught him writing a multi-paged letter to Santa listing all the things he wanted for Christmas he was outraged. It was time to teach his son a lesson.

The father picked up the boy, sat him down in front of the Nativity scene in the living room, and said, “Son, I want you to look at this Nativity scene and think long and hard about what Christmas is all about. Then, I want you to write a letter to Jesus.”

So Billy sat there, looked at that Nativity, and thought about it for a while. He then grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and started to write Jesus a letter. “Dear Jesus, I have been a very good boy.” But then he remembered that Jesus knows everything, so he wadded up that piece of paper, threw it on the ground, and started again.

“Dear Jesus, if you bring me all the presents I want, I will be a good boy all next year.” But he knew he couldn’t keep that promise. So he waded up that paper, threw it, and started again.

“Dear Jesus, if you bring me all the present I want, I will be good for a whole week,” but he didn’t think he could pull that off either. So again, he wadded up the paper and threw it to the ground.

Frustrated, he continued to stare at that Nativity scene until, finally, inspiration struck. He gently reached out and picked up the little statue of Mary, placed her in a box, and hid the box in his room.

Then, Billy got another piece of paper and wrote: “Dear Jesus, if you ever want to see your mother again…”
